BEACHES
There are fabulous beaches, lochs and impressive waterfalls within a reasonable drive from your hut. Heading towards Lochinver on the B869, you can find:
Clashnessie beach (20 minutes drive) – set in a rocky inlet, the beach is a deep crescent of golden sand and a short walk takes you to the impressive Clashnessie falls.
Clachtoll beach (25 minutes drive) is a stunning beach with famous Split Rock and Catchtoll Fish and Chips van on certain days. Nearby take the walk towards the Iron-age Broch to reveal a snapshot of prehistoric life.
Achmelvich beach (35 minutes drive) is a renowned beach with crystal white ‘shell’ sand and turquoise sea. A ‘must do’ stop on the NC500 touring route and the north west Highlands snorkel trail. Shore chip shop open during season.
Further afield heading north across the Kylesku bridge are the beautiful beaches of Oldshoremore, Polin beach and the stunning Sandwood bay (managed by the John Muir trust).
WATERFALLS
Just past Lochinver at Inverkirkaig are the Falls of Kirkaig and a little further just off the A894 about half way between Loch Assynt and the Kylesku Bridge, are the Wailing Widow Falls and Eas a’ Chual Aluinn, one of the highest waterfalls in Britain (best approached by boat tour).
BOAT TRIPS/ ACTIVITIES
Boat tours are available from Kylesku and Lochinver. Spot seals, dolphins and whales.
Looking across Loch Nedd from your hut you can see Handa Island in the distance. In the spring and summer you can take the Tarbert ferry to the island to see puffins and much more.
